Ian Dury

Este miércoles 27 de marzo se cumplen 13 años de la muerte de uno de los músicos más especiales, valientes, inteligentes y divertidos que ha dado la historia del Rock and Roll, Ian Dury.

Nacido el 12 de mayo de 1942 en Essex, Reino Unido, Ian Robins Dury padeció desde pequeño la poliomielitis, hecho que le condicionó toda su vida. Tras su primera infancia en casa de su abuela, durante la guerra, su breve estancia en Suiza y su paso por el instituto (una etapa sórdida en la que sufrió todo tipo de abusos), estudió arte, momento en el que - mientras daba clases de pintura- y quizás pensando más en sus discos de Gene Vincent, tuvo la genial idea de dedicarse a la música. 

Tras unos años como profesor en una escuela de arte, a mediados de los 70 formó la banda Kilburn and The High Roads. Actuando en pequeños locales, pasó de lo que se denominó Pub Rock a ser uno de los pioneros del punk rock. Con Kilburn and the High Roads grabó “Handsome” en 1975, disco producido por Cris Thomas y Hugh Murphy y en el que la mayoría de los temas eran composiciones de Ian Dury y Russell Hardy. El grupo se disolvió ese mismo año 1975,

Ian Dury y The Blockheads 1977-2000

Ian Dury formó los Blockheads en 1977, con Chaz Jankel (que impregnaría la música de Dury de funky y sonidos jazzísticos), Norman Watt-Roy, Charles Charlie, John Turnbull y Mick Gallagher, para el disco New Boots and Pantys, uno de los albumes fundamentales en la historia de la música, en el que destacaban “Sweet Gene Vincent” "My Old Man" o “Wake up and make love to me”, escritas por Dury y Jankel . 

En 1979, Dury editó “Do it yourself”, una auténtica joya de la música funky (“Inbetweenies”, “Don’t ask me” , “Waiting for your taxi” "Dance of the Screamers" o "Lullaby for Franc(i/e)s"), nuevamente con The Blockheads: Chaz Jankel, el bajista Norman Watt-Roy, el batería Charlie Charles, el teclista Mick Gallagher y el guitarra John Turnbull , más la posterior inclusión del saxofonista Davey Payne.

Después de "Do it yourself", Jankel abandonó la banda y fue sustituido en 1980 por Wilko Johnson, ex guitarrista de Dr. Feelgood , con el que grabaría el disco “Laughter” y, ya en la compañía Polydor, “Lord Upminster”, en 1981. 

Tras un tiempo dedicado a las artes escénicas, en 1984 Dury editó “4000 Weeks Holiday” , acompañado por los Music Students.

En 1992 editó “The bus driver’s prayer & other stories” y en 1998 volvió a grabar con los Blockheads su último disco, “Mr. Love Pants”.

El 27 de marzo de 2000, Ian Dury falleció a la edad de 57 años.

Ian Dury, who has died of cancer aged 57, was one of few true originals of the English music scene, the only man to successfully combine the energy and excitement of rock 'n' roll and funk with the bawdy humour, wit and home-spun philosophy of music-hall and of his native Essex. The fact that he had been crippled since childhood, and was severely ill during his final years as a performer, merely added to his stature. He was truly brave - both physically and in the way he approached his music.

Bajo el título de una de las canciones más conocidas de Ian Dury and the Blockheads, "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll", la película estrenada en 2010 se centra en la vida de Dury, narrando su lucha contra la polio en su juventud y su meteórica carrera hacia la vanguardia artística de la época. La relación con su hijo y sus altibajos personales se sirven de los éxitos musicales del artista a modo de telón de fondo.
